About MyShapers

MyShapers Mission:

To empower health care providers, employers, public health organizations and parents to inspire a lifetime of healthy eating & activity habits for children ages 6 to 11.

Celery-smallThe acclaimed MyShapers Nutrition and Activity Management Program was founded in 1978 as a nutrition education program for adults, reaching thousands across Northern California who participated in MyShapers workshops offered by Kaiser Permanente and other health groups.

Today, MyShapers is a complete six-week online program for children ages 6-11 that uses music, interactive videos and home-based activities to gets kids and their parents to eat better and move more. The MyShapers Children Better Eating and Activity Program (MyShapers.com) is a self-paced program of behavior modification, nutrition education and activity management.

The company was founded by a mother and nutritionist, the late Beverley Calhoun, MA, who had her three children eat their fruits and vegetables, and play and have fun every day. The company is run today by daughter Laura Conrad, a mother of two from Sacramento who also has her children eat their fruits and vegetables, and play and have fun every day. Conrad skateboards with her children, ages 9 and 21, finds the fun in nutrition, and wishes good nutrition on all.

“MyShapers uses fun videos and lively characters including animated fruits and vegetables to bring our nutrition and fitness lessons to life. We want families to make small lifestyle changes that add up to a lifetime of good health.

MyShapers is offered to medical groups and individuals in an online format designed to keep the younger audience entertained with a catchy MyShapers hip-hop song, bright graphics and lively lessons. We are a cutting-edge tool with decades of experience to guide us in our fight against the growing epidemic of childhood obesity, diabetes and inactivity.”

Founder

Beverley-CalhounBeverley A. Calhoun, MA, Founder of Shapers

Beverley worked for the University of California Berkeley, Cooperative Extension as a Nutrition Supervisor. Working in the community to manage to Cooperative Extension sites in El Cerrito and Berkeley, she learned about the lack of nutrition education and unhealthy lifestyle choices among the population she served. After 7 years in this position, Beverley started Shapers. She initially worked part time on developing Shapers and eventually retired from the University to run Shapers full time. The success of Shapers resulted in a number of contracts with major corporations such as Hewlett Packard and AT&T, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), public school districts, and health care organizations such as Kaiser Permanente. In 1970s, Shapers became the first vendor Kaiser Permanente contracted with for weight management or any health education program. Beverly’s daughter, Laura, joined her at Shapers in the 1984 to help grow and expand services throughout Northern California. Beverly continued to work as an advisor to Shapers and various related projects in the field until her death in 2012. She is survived today by her daughter Laura and the legacy she founded in the Shapers health program.
